Empyema is an infection of the space between the lungs and the chest wall that results in the accumulation of fluid and pus. It is often associated with trauma, pneumonia, or an infection that has spread from the abdomen. In severe cases, the fluid can compress the lungs and cause it to collapse. Treatment can range from drainage of the accumulating fluid through a chest tube to surgical procedures that help re-expand the lung.
