Emphysema is a condition in which the walls of the lungs’ air sacs become damaged, and eventually rupture. They lose their elasticity, and become stretched (distended), and are unable to re-coil. Emphysema makes breathing extremely difficult, produces a husky cough, and frequently causes impairment of heart function.
